Alamo Plaza

Photo crop exposure date: unknown. Exposure date (or window) of subject photo: ca. 1896. Street car stop. “CARS STOP HERE.” A common sign which has mistakenly been understood in later years to mean automobiles, however the sign indicated both a streetcar stop and gave reference to which lines and/or cars could be boarded at that location. The south tower of the Hugo & Schmeltzer Building (1877) is not present (removed by 1896). The view is east from sidewalk in front of Crockett Block (1884).
